![]() Making music makes you smarter, it helps to relieve pain and stress and improve your health and memory – it can even boost your social life! These are just some of the many benefits of playing a musical instrument claim the Music Industries Association (MIA) and Classic FM, who have teamed up to launch Get Alive! a brand new national campaign to get more people to not just think about playing – but to actually have a go. The campaign, backed by Classic FM presenter Myleene Klass and supported by a wealth of scientific research, aims to communicate the huge number of social, therapeutic, developmental and academic benefits of music making. With almost 80 percent of the British public not currently playing and only 20 percent aware of the impact making music can have on a person’s over all wellbeing, Get Alive! will encourage and help people of all ages to bite the bullet and to take up a musical instrument. Myleene Klass said: “Learning to play an instrument is not only fundamental in developing new skills and musical awareness, but it is a fantastic communicator and a brilliant form of expression for all ages. Learning to play the piano was for me without a doubt the best thing I could ever have done.” Promoted via a series of programmes on Classic FM, leaflets in consumer magazines and via national PR support, the Get Alive! Campaign is divided into three sections, each championing a different area of the benefits of playing music – keeping you younger, making you smarter and improving your health. Via a Get Alive! website, www.mia.org.uk the campaign offers the 15.5 million plus Brits who would like to learn to play an instrument a one-stop-shop providing information and advice on how to find a music teacher, how to buy the right musical instrument and how to find out about local music events and activities. Professor Susan Hallam, University of London’s Institute of Education, and author of the recent study ‘Music Psychology in Education’ comments, “I am delighted to lend my support to this campaign. Learning to play an instrument has numerous benefits including aiding concentration and relaxation and influencing moods and emotions - it can even boost the immune system.” Paul McManus, chief executive, MIA commented, “We are thrilled to be working in partnership with Classic FM, who are the true pioneers of bringing music to new audiences. With Classic FM’s support the Get Alive! Campaign will reach a whole new group of potential musicians and help all those who would like to play and understand the joys and benefits of making music.” Darren Henley, Station Manager at Classic FM said: “Classic FM is committed to engaging people of all ages with classical music. We’re delighted to be working with the MIA on this project to bring the benefits of playing a musical instrument to our six million listeners.” www.mia.org.uk August 2006 |
