Thursday 17 April 2008 Brahms Trio for horn, violin and piano in E flat, Opus 40 Brahms Violin Sonata 3 in D minor, Opus 108 Brahms Piano Trio 1 in B, Opus 8 (1889 revised version) Soloists of the London Philharmonic Orchestra Philippe Bianconi piano The prize-winning French pianist Philippe Bianconi first appeared in this series in 2006 playing two trios by Brahms, and he returns now in a whole programme devoted to the same Romantic master. The Trio for horn, violin and piano plays on the horn’s association with forest melancholy and with the hunt. The last of the violin sonatas is a work of mature reflection, but still with a hint of Brahms’s youthful ‘storm and stress’. Last, the B major Piano Trio also unites early and late Brahms, since he wrote it at the age of 20 and revised it completely, but seamlessly, some 35 years later. Monday 12 May 2008 Haydn Trio for 2 violins and cello in C, H.V:16 Mozart Clarinet Quintet in A, K. 581 Gwilym Simcock Sonata for horn and piano (world première) Spohr Octet in E, Opus 32 Soloists of the London Philharmonic Orchestra Gwilym Simcock piano An early string Trio by Haydn precedes a late masterpiece by Mozart, the ripe Quintet for clarinet and strings. The rising jazz star Gwilym Simcock, leader of a big band and a member of the innovative three-piece jazz ensemble, Acoustic Triangle, takes the piano part in a Sonata specially written for a fellow horn student in his school days, London Philharmonic Orchestra member Christopher Parkes. And the concert ends with Spohr’s 1814 Octet for clarinet, horns and strings, an engaging piece which includes a set of variations on Handel’s ‘Harmonious Blacksmith’ theme. Go to www.lpo.org.uk and find the concerts to listen to selected movements from the programmes.
