Gary Houghton decides music may be the food of love but when it comes to keeping the home fires burning, we all need something a little more substantial. A quick survey of avid local players not surprisingly revealed amateur musicians take their musical commitments seriously but don’t like going hungry. 1. Fish and Chips. The traditional favourite take-away sits at the top of the gastronomic heap, the temptation to pick up a bag on the way home from rehearsals seemingly irresistible to most muso’s. 2. Indian and Chinese take-away. ![]() Ethnic cuisine proving most popular with those who had chosen to follow their Conductor’s lead and sink a few in the local first. 3. Pizza. The Italian perennial is ideal for a hot and tasty meal when you’re rushing out the door. From your freezer to your plate in under 30 minutes and offering a huge variety of flavours from Ham and Pineapple to the sublime (but incredibly fatty) Pepperoni you really can’t go wrong. Editors tip- two for £3.00 at Sainsbury’s. 4. Cheese on Toast. It’s tasty, it’s quick, it’s cheap but who are we kidding, it is just pizza without the tomato! 5. Lager. Unfortunately, every orchestra and band has one. 6. A Sandwich. One for the ladies? A healthy option finally puts in an appearance with Tuna, Egg and good old Ham leading the way. Thankfully it wasn’t all strictly PC. One memorable contributor indicated ‘sandwiches’ but went on to point out they’d be ‘butties’ using the chips he’d picked up from the ‘Gates of India’! 7. Something Reheated. Amateur musicians aren’t amiss to the fact that some dishes are easily recycled for a second day. Worryingly dishes 1 through 4 were all deemed suitable for ‘nuking’ in the microwave with the addition of Spaghetti Bolognaise, Chile Con Carne and Corned Beef Hash. I am reliably informed Cheese on Toast sets like concrete and can only be sucked after a reheat. 8. A bowl of Special K. You know who you are. 9. Puddings, Sweets Biscuits. Often a shortage of time simply means we cut straight to the chase, miss out the proteins and carbs and load up on the fats and sugars. Both yummy and portable. Even Christmas pudding was listed, rich in well - just about everything including a shot of brandy. A muso’s dream! 10. Crisps, Nuts and Pork Scratchings. The emergency rations which every amateur musician has relied upon in times of need. Like Kendal Mint Cake or a Fisherman’s Friend, a true life saver and readily available over every bar in the country. August 2007 |
