Timothy Johnson raves about holidays in Salzburg, Austria. Dear Amateur Musician I came across your website as a result of searching for amateur orchestras on the Internet. I have to say I was very impressed with the content, but more than anything I was intrigued by the invitation to write, and submit an article on any music related subject. I have never written an article intended for publication, and I’ve certainly never submitted one before, however I thought I’d have a go. I don’t expect you’ll publish it, but I thought you might be interested in the summer holiday I went on with my wife, Amanda, last year. We are both musicians and play in an amateur string quartet, (me 2nd violin, Amanda Cello) however our passion is the Music of Mozart. So we decided to visit the town of Mozart’s birth, Salzburg in Austria. Mirabell Gardens. What a beautiful place this is. Never before had we seen such breathtaking scenery, gardens and architecture. Some of the scenes are straight out of “The Sound of Music”, literally, parts of the movie were filmed in Salzburg. Mozart was born on 27th January 1756 and of course was destined to become one of the most famous composers in history. An ideal person to base a whole tourist industry on, and it’s true much of the theme of Salzburg is about Mozart and classical music in general. There are many musical tourist trails to be discovered. Amanda and I thought we’d start at the beginning and visit the house where Mozart was born. ![]() It isn’t only tourists who flock to Salzburg though, there is a vast number of music students in the city mostly studying at the Mozart University. One gentleman told us that the population of Salzburg was 150,000 people, and that 20,000 of them were music students. I don’t know how much truth there is in that, but certainly you can hear classical music being played constantly wherever you venture. Of course, one of the main features of a holiday like this is to take in some classical music concerts, and it goes without saying, there is no shortage of them to take in. the highlight for us was a concert at the Mozarteum Concert Hall where we were treated to some of Wolfgang’s best known works. Pure joy. We certainly enjoyed our time doing the tourist thing in Austria, and I would recommend this type of holiday to any music fans who haven’t booked for this year yet. You’ll love Salzburg and Austria. ![]() This year we intend to go to Timothy Johnson The Editor March 2007 |
