| Rare violins set new Sotheby's records |

A number of rare violins went on sale at Sotheby's in London in early November as part of a Musical Instrument catalogue. A violin made by Zanotti and one by Pedrazzine sold for £42,000 and £36,000 respectively setting new records for instruments from these makers.![]() Commenting on the sale, Tim Ingles, Head of Sotheby’s Musical Instruments department, said: “We are very pleased with the results of the sale, which achieved two new auction records. The results demonstrate the continued strength of the market for high quality and rare instruments, which were competed for by the trade, private collectors and musicians. Violins by Italian makers performed particularly well in the sale.” The top ten sales were as follows: Lot 230 a violin by Nicolo Amati. Sale price £153,600, (Estimate £50,000 - £80,000). Buyer - U.S. Trader. Lot 52 a violin labelled Pressenda. Sale price £81,600, (Estimate £2,000 - £4,000). Buyer - Continental Trade. Lot 229 a violin by Jacob Stainer. Sale price £48,000, (Estimate £40,000 - £60,000). Buyer - Musician. Lot 145 a violin by Nicola Gagliano. Sale price £48,000, (Estimate £30,000 - £50,000 ). Buyer - Private Collector. Lot 146 a violin by J.B. Vuillaume. Sale price £45,600, (Estimate £35,000 - £45,000). Buyer - Continental Trade. Lot 139 a violin by Zanotti. Sale price £42,000, (Estimate £7,000 - £10,000). Buyer - London Trade. Lot 55 a violin probably by Jacob Stainer. Sale price £38,400, (Estimate £14,000 – £18,000). Buyer - US Trade. Lot 26 a violin by Pedrazzini.
