October 2006 The new Pearl piccolo (PFP105) is a revelation in terms of performance for the price - pro players normally pay well over £2500 for their instruments and yet, in recent months Andrew Lane (CBSO), Stewart MacIlwham (London Philharmonic Orchestra) and Sebastian Bell (London Sinfonietta) have all bought these stunning instruments that cost less than a third of the price. They are made of a new resinous material called grenaditte which is designed to mimic the tonal complexities of wood, but which is light and will never crack. The headjoint has a subtle 'reform' design that lends it a precision and responsiveness that is remarkable. This piccolo is simply stunning. Ignore the fact that it isn't wood because it has an ease of response that makes it a very exciting blow indeed. Well engineered with a reform lip-plate to maximise performance. Highly recommended.
